The third longest running competition of its type in Japan, the Fukuoka Marathon is run on roads, is a record quality course and is the tenth longest running annual marathon race in recorded history. On 4th December 1983 Paul Eales, the only English representative among the finishers, was placed 62nd out of 124 finishers, only 17 of them being non-Japanese athletes. His time was 2hrs 24min 11secs. The race was won by Tohihiko Seko of Japan in 2hrs 8min 53secs.
