Redhill Bowling Club Newsletter – July 2017

Welcome to our July 2017 newsletter.

The purpose of this newsletter is to bring our members up to speed with many of the activities that are happening at Redhill Bowling Club.

Matches played up to and including Friday 30th June

Our Captains have reported that, to date, we have won three games, drawn one and unfortunately lost 6, one of which being a NDL match. There has been one match postponed and one match cancelled by us due to not being able to raise the required numbers. It appears that we are continuing to have problems getting names on the board, so please keep an eye on our fixture card and notice boards and sign up for matches as soon as possible.

Border League

Our Border League season kicked off with a resounding win at Godstone (away) on 8th June where we picked up a maximum 10 points as a result of winning all three rinks. This was followed up with a comfortable win against a strong Dorking team (home) on 15th June where the points score was 8-2 in our favour having won 2 rinks and losing one. Our match at Reigate Priory on 22nd June resulted in a two rinks to one victory and with the overall shot score in our favour we picked up another 8 points (2 points to Reigate Priory). And hot off the press, our latest match against Horsham Park (29th June) – another 2-1 rink victory and a further 8 points. All of this means we are sitting pretty at the top of the league.

Well done everyone who has played in these matches and thanks for the continuing support in being available for selection. In fact, the strong availability of players has made selection difficult (in a great way) so you may have noticed there has been some recent rotation in the teams selected.

We have placed an ‘unavailability sheet’ on the club notice board. We will assume you are available for Border Leagues matches if you have not let us know on this sheet.

Next Fixtures

Please look at you fixture card and/or the club notice board for future matches and sign up early.

Please check the website or notice board to see if you have been selected and please tick you name to let your captain know you can play. Alternatively please telephone either the club or your captain to confirm.

Upcoming Events

Please keep an eye out for the following upcoming events and SIGN UP:

  • Bowls and BBQ – Saturday 22nd July
  • Eyeworks Man’s Invitation Day – Saturday 29th July

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Frank Hall Trophy due to lack of numbers. We are considering an alternative event in its place later in the year.

Access Road

The Committee has decided that the access gate is to remain open if and for as long as the Club is open at any time. I will be informing the Council and will be placing a notice on the allotment notice board. If any member experiences any negative feedback or hostility, please pass on my telephone number and I will take the matter up with those raising the objection.

Visitor’s Changing Room

The Directors are in the process of applying for external funding for this project. It remains an urgent matter for the club and a further update will be communicated to members as soon as possible.

Internal Club Competitions

Members have enquired whether any extension to arrange club competition matches is available. Unfortunately, the answer to this question has to be no. If anyone is unable to play in a competition they have entered for, in any round, they will either forfeit the game or be substituted if it is a pairs game.

General Club Maintenance

I am delighted to report that Roger Gatland has agreed to be the central coordinator for general club maintenance matters. I would ask you to note though, that this doesn’t mean Roger will actually be doing the work. Rather, he will assess the matter in hand and arrange for someone with the right skill or a working party to be organised. If any members have any maintenance requests please contact Roger directly.

…and finally a bit of a moan

If you have signed up for a match and have been subsequently selected you will be expected to play. I appreciate there may be occasions where your circumstances change resulting in you not being able to make the match. If this happens, you must reach out to your captain in good time in order for a replacement to be found. All this will avoid any embarrassing situations with our opposition.

We hope you find this newsletter informative. If you have any queries or suggestions please seek out one of the Committee Members.
